David Hawthorne Technical Communicator San Diego, California

My Career Evolution

Electrical Engineering

After earning dual degrees in Electrical Engineering and Liberal Arts from the University of Illinois, I embarked on a career that would lead me through a wide variety of roles with electronics manufacturers and software producers. I grew from board-level circuit designer to system engineer and was eventually promoted to engineering manager. Throughout my engineering career, I had many opportunities to develop my technical writing skills, working on specifications, manuals, reports, proposals, and articles for technical journals.

Technical Sales and Marketing

My unique communication and interpersonal skills were soon recognized by my colleagues. I was encouraged to accept more customer-facing responsibilities. In the late 1990's, I moved into sales and marketing, where I used my communication skills to help companies expand their customer base and penetrate new markets. My writing experience expanded as I became involved with proposals and marketing communications. I developed product literature, application notes and web content. While I enjoyed the challenges of sales and marketing, I realized that my true passion was for technical writing and digital communication.

Transition to Technical Communicator

In June of 2018, I completed the Technical Communication certificate program through the University of California San Diego extension. This in-depth curriculum prepared me for a move into a dedicated, technical communicator role. My goal is to create compelling product documentation that helps readers get things done. My specific area of focus is applications for XML and DITA--skills I developed in parallel with my studies at UCSD.
